Neck pain and whiplash treatment

(located in Kelvin Grove)

Why do we get neck pain?

Neck pain is common, especially as we become more reliant on technology. At Pivot Osteopathy, we see people with neck everyday. Pain can arise from a variety of causes such as:

  • Poor posture, especially as we spend increasingly long hours on our computers and phones

  • Muscle strains or joint sprains

  • Sporting injuries

  • Degenerative neck issues such as arthritis

  • Whiplash

A note on whiplash:

Whiplash is a common cause of neck pain. It occurs due to a high speed injury where the head suddenly moves backward and then forward. We commonly see people with whiplash from car crashes, sporting injuries or falls.

Interestingly, the pain you experience after whiplash isn’t always due to the whiplash injury. Research shows that pain can also be a result of the postures we adopt after the accident. Initially these postures are helpful as they protect the neck and reduce pain.

Unfortunately, when we keep these protective postures over the long-term, they can create dysfunctional movement patterns that are very unhelpful or downright painful. Our Osteopaths are trained to recognise postures and movement patterns that may have developed post whiplash that could be adding to your pain. We may be able to help you regain more normal patterns and understand how pain works so that you can reduce your pain and move more freely.

What can Osteopaths do for neck pain?

At Pivot Osteopathy we target neck pain relief that is focussed on the long-term. Therefore we focus on individualised care that aligns with how your neck pain started, your goals and your lifestyle.

Each neck pain treatment session is a personalised, one-on-one session that usually includes:

  • Discussion about where it hurts, how the neck pain started, previous injuries and other relevant history

  • A physical assessment, which may include orthopedic or neurological testing where clinically indicated

  • Hands-on treatment. Our Osteopaths are highly skilled in a variety of techniques that are designed to improve mobility and decrease pain. These techniques may include soft tissue massage, mobilisation of joints, stretching, myofascial techniques, visceral release techniques.

  • Exercises and/or stretches. We target the key exercises that will help get your neck moving better. If you already have a Personal Trainer, Exercise Physiologist or other exercise therapist working with you, we can work with them too.

  • Education. Because we know that understanding how pain works, why you got injured and what you can do to avoid future injuries are key to managing and preventing neck pain.

At Pivot Ostepathy, we focus on reducing your neck pain symptoms. But we also want to help you build your health toolbox and equip you with the ‘tools’ you need to get through this episode of neck pain and avoid future episodes.
