Mid and upper back treatment

(located in Kelvin Grove)

What is upper or mid back pain?

You can get pain anywhere in your spine. The mid to upper back is part of the region known as your ‘thoracic spine’. There are a variety of reasons why we get pain in this area. Some of the most common causes of pain we see are:

  • Desk/office related pain. This is a very common cause of pain in this area.

  • Rib sprains often from heavy lifting or from coughing after a cold or illness.

  • Shoulder issues that affect the upper back.

A note on Asthma:

Asthma affects more than just your lungs and bronchiales. It can affect all the muscles in your chest, your breathing and your posture.

Research shows that addressing the muscle tension and breathing patterns associated with asthma can reduce reliance on medication for many asthmatics. At Pivot Osteopathy we can help reduce tension in the muscles in the neck, between the ribs and the diaphragm as well as assist you with developing better breathing habits that may assist with asthma control.

What can Osteopaths do for upper or mid back pain?

At Pivot Osteopathy we target upper and mid back pain relief that is focussed on the long-term. Therefore we focus on individualised care that aligns with how your injury occurred, your goals and your lifestyle.

Each back pain treatment session is a personalised, one-on-one session that usually includes:

  • Discussion about where it hurts, how the back pain started, previous injuries and other relevant history

  • A physical assessment, which may include orthopedic or neurological testing where clinically indicated

  • Hands-on treatment. Our Osteopaths are highly skilled in a variety of techniques that are designed to improve mobility and decrease pain. These techniques may include soft tissue massage, mobilisation of joints, stretching, myofascial techniques, visceral release techniques.

  • Exercises and/or stretches. We target the key exercises that will help get your back moving better. If you already have a Personal Trainer, Exercise Physiologist or other exercise therapist working with you, we can work with them too.

  • Education. With mid and upper back pain, we find that the issue has often built up over time. We can help you find ways to change your daily postures and introduce movements that will help manage this build-up.

At Pivot Osteopathy, we focus on reducing your mid and upper back pain symptoms. But we also want to help you build your health toolbox and equip you with the ‘tools’ you need to get through this episode of back pain and avoid future episodes.
